Therapy is also often called psychotherapy, psychosocial therapy, and counseling. Therapy is a joint process between the therapist and the person or people in therapy, whether that be an individual, couple, or family. Together, therapist and clients work toward a common goal or goals, such as inspiring growth, seeking support through major life changes, improving quality of life, and processing past traumas. Therapy can help us deal with issues that are hard to face and overcome obstacles to our well-being. It can increase positive feelings, such as compassion and self-esteem. In therapy, we can learn skills for handling difficult situations, making healthy decisions, and reaching goals. Contrary to how it is sometimes portrayed, we don’t have to be experiencing difficulties to seek therapy. Many folks find they enjoy the therapeutic journey of becoming more self-aware and engage in ongoing therapy for self-growth.

Throughout life’s journey, we may find ourselves feeling lost, unsure of where to go or where to start. We may feel disconnected from ourselves and others. We may come to realize that past experiences have shaped our worldview, and how we relate to and connect with others. We may recognize that there are patterns of thinking or behavior within our family system that we want to break, but aren’t sure how. My name is Stephanie and I’m here to be your guide through this.

When we have experienced trauma, we may find it easier to leave it in the past; however, these experiences can change how we think and feel about ourselves and our surroundings. Through therapy, we can regain understanding of ourselves by reconnecting to our feelings of safety, belonging, and hope. We can learn new skills to strengthen our relationships and establish secure attachment patterns. In order to achieve this, I use an eclectic approach to therapy by utilizing evidence-based modalities, such as EMDR and emotion-focused psychotherapy. I use an attachment and somatic focus, as I believe our early attachment patterns and our mind/body connection are key factors in how we process and react to stressors. I work from a secular, anti-capitalist, and individualistic lens so that I can cultivate a space where you are free to show up as your most authentic self.

I have a passion to work with adolescents and adults dealing with complex and single-incident trauma, religious-based trauma, relationship issues, family conflict, ADHD, and life transitions. I have experience working with those who are victims of commercial sex trafficking and with those who have disordered eating patterns. I ally myself with the LGBTQIA+ community, non-monogamy community, and persons of color. I have experience working in schools, residential treatment programs, and private practice.

Sometimes unexpected things or events happen to us that can make life satisfaction or happiness feel out of our grasp. Things like chronic physical or mental illness, having a disability or being different then what society calls the “norm”, romantic and familial relationships, trauma, abuse, anxiety, or depression can lead you to feel extremely overwhelmed and as if your life is out of control. This may cause you to feel trapped, alone, unsafe, or stuck in a dark chapter of your life that sometimes feels unbearable or unending. I am here to help you turn the page and progress to a new chapter of your story. My office is a place for you to talk, sort thoughts, cry, express, strategize, learn, vent, and create without judgment. It is important to have someone in your life that you can trust and comfortably express your concerns, emotions, and thoughts to. My primary goal is to help clients find wellness and stability while guiding them through difficult life challenges. I work through a client-centered and strengths-based lens, meaning that I focus on each client’s unique circumstance that they may be facing and their personal strengths. I strive to create an individualized plan with therapeutic goals and techniques that my clients can utilize during and after our time together. I also believe that the body and mind go hand in hand and if you are struggling with your physical or mental health one can affect the other. Your concerns are real and valid and deserve to be heard instead of overlooked. I will offer respect, empathy, compassion, openness and courage to you as we work together to reach your goals. I work with children and adults. I also enjoy helping others with relationships, whether it be with a loved one, parent and child, or friendships. I started my work in the mental health field volunteering for a suicide awareness group in high school where I was able to advocate for suicide prevention and mental health awareness. During my undergraduate experience, I completed a field placement at an OB/GYN unit where I provided medical social work to high-risk pregnant patients of all ages. As a Masters Student I completed an internship at a private practice where I was able to perform therapy with clients and observe other therapy sessions. No matter who you are or what you have experienced, I applaud you for seeking therapy and am happy to work with you.

When we experience trauma, we are often left feeling alone, misunderstood, invisible, and unsafe, even within ourselves. Through the process of therapy, we can regain hope, connection, safety, and understanding of ourselves and others. I use wide-range of evidenced-based modalities, from psychodynamic and CBT to EMDR and somatic therapies to decrease the emotional reactivity, tension, and isolation that trauma can create. Regardless of our trauma histories, our modern world can contribute to feelings of disconnection, dissatisfaction, and uncertainty about our worth and our purpose.

I strive to create a safe, compassionate, trust-filled space in which you can show up fully as yourself. My goal is always to work myself out of a job, and I hope you leave our time together knowing yourself, your strength, and your resilience. My role isn’t to tell you what to do but rather to support you in crafting your most fulfilling life.

I work with children, adolescents, and adults on a wide range of concerns, including complex trauma, abuse, anxiety, depression, and ODD. With training in feminist and multicultural theories, I counsel from an anti-oppressive lens and have spent most of my career working with the LGBTQ+ community, women, chronically ill clients, and immigrant populations.

They say that if life gives you lemons, make lemonade; but what if life has been throwing lemons at you since you were too little to even know how to make lemonade? What happens if you don’t even like lemonade? More often than not, chaos tends to occur when we are too young to know what to do or how to recover. Early childhood trauma leaves us broken and questioning our roadmap. That’s where I come in because in the words of one of my favorite authors, Sarah J Maas; “Only you can decide what breaks you.”

I can’t promise that you will feel instantly better or less broken. Unfortunately, my letter from Hogwarts was lost in the 90’s when the ministry had their memories wiped so I never quite learned how to wave a wand and make anyone’s problems disappear. I also do not know any fairy godmothers, wizards or mice who can magick our worries, fears or manifestations away.

As the parable of the butterfly states though, the struggles you have been through makes you who you are and as such, I promise to meet you where you are. You are the expert of your story but you don’t have to trudge through it alone. I can promise to be a listening ear and hold your hand while we learn together how to dodge the lemons life has been throwing at you.

I have many passions, including learning how to navigate and manage the symptoms of ADHD. I have experience with ages 3-50 and specialize in parent training for children under 7. I use many modalities including play therapy, animal assisted therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy which includes a trauma focussed component. But mostly, I learn to acclimate therapy to each individual person that comes into my office. I have done some art therapy and journal therapy to better help different individuals through their journeys. I love to draw and use creative outlets and work to find the right modality to fit each person’s needs. Therapy is not a one size fits all kind of fix but a fluid process that we journey through together. I have experience with trauma, ADHD, depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicidal ideation in teens and adults.

Hello there. Welcome to my little part of the website. I’m so happy you’re here. I’m Xuan (English pronunciation Sue Anne). In life, there are times, places and spaces where we may feel unheard, unseen, and overlooked. Unfortunately those feelings are multiplied when marginalized identities such as race, gender identity, and ability status come into play. As a first generation disabled Asian American, I bring all of my identities to the table without shame and encourage others to do the same. When we bring our whole authentic selves to the table, we are giving permission for others to do the same.

I have extensive experience in both disability advocacy and career counseling and have spent a great number of those years creating spaces of belonging for those identifying with a disability in spaces of employment. I use a person centered approach with a lens of intersectionality to create an environment that is empowering and inviting.

So I invite you to connect, share space, and break bread with me. Whether you are struggling with career related issues, or need support in finding belonging, let’s see if we’re the right fit. Whether or not you decide to share this part of your journey with me, I hope you find a space where you can be seen and authentically known.
